MDBC Climate Solution of the Week HEINEKEN Malaysia

Introducing our Climate Solution of the Week: Heineken Malaysia Berhad‘s Brew a Better World 🌏 strategy, ensuring Zero Waste to Landfill.

Guided by the company’s global Brew a Better World sustainability strategy, HEINEKEN Malaysia 🍻 is committed to creating long – term sustainable value for its stakeholders. They’ve set an ambitious target 🎯 to reach Net Zero in Scope 1 & 2 by 2030, and across the entire value chain by 2040.

One of the company’s key ambitions in Environmental Sustainability is to ensure Zero Waste to Landfill by maximizing circularity through reusing, recycling ♻, and upcycling. Their commitment extends beyond brewing better beer – it’s about brewing a better world. These zero waste to landfill initiatives align with the UN’s SDGs:
• SDG12 (Responsible Consumption and Production); and
• SDG13 (Climate Action);

Maximizing Circularity from Barley to Bar – Since 2017, HEINEKEN Malaysia has achieved zero waste ⛔ 🗑️ to landfill by responsibly recycling and upcycling their by – products and production waste. In 2022, their Sungei Way Brewery in Petaling Jaya generated 35,423 tonnes of waste comprising of organic and inorganic wastes.

Did you know?
• 100% of this waste was recycled as new materials or upcycled to be used in other industries, generating RM1.9 million in revenue, which was channeled back into sustainability projects.

This achievement is possible through collaboration with certified local waste management partners to ensure seamless and successful circular management throughout their operations. One of the interesting projects HEINEKEN Malaysia is working on is a bioconversion initiative where organic waste like spent grains that have been used for brewing beer are transformed into high protein products for the animal feed and agriculture industry through a bioconversion process using black soldier fly larvae.

Inorganic wastes including aluminum, glass culets, paper cartons, are collected and recycled. The brewer also has a returnable bottle system where glass bottles from restaurants, coffee shops, bars and pubs are collected and returned to its Sungei Way Brewery to be washed before being refilled with fresh beer.

💡 Innovation will be key to revolutionizing packaging for the future, and the brewer is working with partners to explore thinner, lighter, yet more durable materials that are less resource intensive.

As they look forward to the future, HEINEKEN Malaysia’s cross – functional and collaborative approach will be key to realizing its Brew a Better World ambitions, and they want to inspire other businesses to join them on this journey.
