MDBC Climate Solution of the Week: Kloth

Meet MDBC’s Climate Solution of the Week: Kloth Circularity, an aspirational social enterprise formed by two Malaysian women and a team of all dedicated women from diverse backgrounds. It is committed to being a catalyst for the textiles, clothing, and plastics circular economy and is the winner of the MDBC Innovation and Sustainability Awards Special Edition 2023 (MISA Awards 2023) for ‘Outstanding Malaysian – Dutch Partnership’!

Kloth Circularity owns four cause – driven brands, all of which are aligned with its 5R philosophy: ‘Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle.’ These brands include Kloth Cares, Kloth Woman Up, Kloth Textile, and Kloth Wear.

– ♻️ Kloth Cares was established in 2017 as an environmental, economic, and social impact movement brand. It is notably committed to catalyzing the textiles and clothing circular economy, keeping unwanted fabrics out of incinerators and landfills;

👕 Kloth Cares offers impactful textile and clothing waste management solutions. They achieve this by installing Kloth Cares fabric recycling bins, which can be found at over 600 accessible drop – off locations. Additionally, we actively encourage the community to organize fabric recycling collection drives. Currently, our operations span across Malaysia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Australia.

🗑️ Partnering with Malaysia’s only ISO – certified textile recycler, Kloth Cares recycles many types of textiles and clothing including garments, scarves, belts, bags, purses, shoes, fabric rolls, linens, pillows etc. They adhere to a strict zero – waste policy to keep textile waste away from incinerators and landfills as much as possible.

👕 Kloth Cares has partnered with several Dutch companies to strengthen their fabric circular economy movement. Through partnerships with organizations like Shell, Unilever, MDBC, and Philips, Kloth has collected roughly over 6.4 million kg of unwanted textiles and clothing between March 2017 and October 2023. The total amount of textile waste collected is equivalent to 38.8 million pieces of t – shirts saved from landfills, 11.9 million kg CO2 – e of greenhouse gases avoided, and about RM1 million of landfill costs saved.

– 🪡🧵 Kloth Woman Up was established in 2020 with the aim of empowering the livelihoods of women from the marginalized, vulnerable, and struggling communities. Staying true to its mission ‘Rising with #SHEconomy’, they achieve this by providing women with sewing knowledge to upcycle unwanted textiles and clothing into new merchandise and gifts;

🆙Since July 2020, over 31,000 merchandise and gifts were produced and sold to B2B and B2C customers under our Kloth Woman Up initiative. At least 30 women from the marginalized, struggling, and vulnerable communities were involved in the production of these items and are earning a fair income from creative sewing.

– Kloth Textile was established in 2014 as a brand for sourcing, marketing, and distribution of high – quality and sustainable fabrics, mostly made from recycled plastic bottles (rPET). The overall production contributes to a lower carbon footprint and emphasizes the core concept of circular economy;

– Kloth Wear was also established in 2014, and is a brand dedicated to designing, sewing, and marketing of clothing and wearable items made from the recycled plastic bottles (rPET) and sustainable fabrics sourced by Kloth Textile. Some of the notable products from this include corporate uniforms, merchandises, and gifts.

A combined total of 35,000 units of uniforms, merchandises, and gifts have been successfully sold through Kloth Textile and Kloth Wear. Notably, these products are made from recycled materials, particularly encompassing around 315,000 loose plastic bottles, which were predominantly sold to corporate clients.
